Scholastic Inc offers four FREE apps for helping children develop a love for reading

My kids' school held a book fair from Scholastic Inc this last week. I spent the week volunteering and helping the kids find books. Throughout the week I talked to the kids about books, what they are interested in and what books can help them learn more about their passions. I have a great respect for Scholastic as a company, and I learned that beyond books and elementary book fairs, they also offer FREE apps! Check out these free apps for finding books on an appropriate reading level, a reading timer and even building conversations between parents and children. You may also want to check out the parent section of the Scholastic website for other great resources.

Scholastic Parent & Child KidQ

Scholastic Parent & Child believes that one of the best ways to connect with your child is through conversation. The KidQ app for iPhone and Android facilitates conversation via fun Q&A’s about the things that kids (and parents!) are the most curious about, like Why is the sky blue? and Why do we say “ears” of corn? Each day, users receive a playful question that serves as a conversation starter along with the official answer. Families will have a blast as they compare their explanations to the facts!

Scholastic Reading Timer

Becoming a good reader requires practice, just like learning to play a sport or an instrument. The Scholastic Reading Timer app promotes reading practice by encouraging reading every day and most importantly, makes it fun! Use the Scholastic Reading Timer in two ways: in conjunction with the Scholastic Summer Challenge, where kids are given weekly reading goals and log their reading minutes to win virtual rewards, or as a fun and functional reading timer throughout the year. Either way, the power of reading is in the palm of their hands.

Scholastic Book Wizard Mobile

The Book Wizard Mobile application (School Edition) is a mobile extension of the Book Wizard which provides easy access to Scholastic’s comprehensive database of information on more than 50,000 children's books. Hundreds of thousands of teachers already use Book Wizard online at Scholastic.com. Book Wizard Mobile will save you even more time.

Teachers can search for a book or use the built-in bar-code scanner to instantly view the book’s:
