The Nutcracker is a story often told at bedtime as part of a family's Christmas traditions. There are many versions/books and so it stands to reason there would be many Nutcracker apps. There are not many like this one, however, using incredible illustrations by Yoko Tanaka and the timeless classic music score by Tchaikovsky. You simply must add this app to your virtual bookshelf. Especially while it is free!

There is no narration built into this storybook, so it will be more suitable for the independent readers of your family or for sharing with your emerging readers. I'm not sure I would recommend it to very young children as the illustrations with the accompanying music can be quite gripping and may frighten kids whose imaginations are very vivid and have a tendency for nightmares. Otherwise, the story is quite charming and the interactive sound effects are a nice touch.
I like how the baubles on the Christmas tree on the home page allow the reader to jump to the desired page number. However, I do not like having to go back to the home page to be able to access that feature. The Nutcracker is a great way to introduce some timeless music to your child, and to keep the magic of Christmas alive just a little bit longer for upper elementary students.
