Let me get this out in the open: I love board games. I wish we could spend every night as family board game night.
But I don’t play board games. Not with my kids, at least. Not since they destroyed the backgammon set I inherited from my grandparents.
Actually, truth be told, I gave them more chances than that. There was the checkers set that ended up being flushed down the toilet. The Disney monopoly set whose cards were thrown out the window. The picture find game that ended up being ripped into pieces because they wanted to see why the carboard could peel…
Once there was a Connect Four set.

Needless to say, our family Connect Four set went the way of the 100 pieces of Lego I stepped on every day. Eventually I got sick of picking it up and swept it up. I think that was the day I vowed never to buy another board game.
But guess what? There’s an app for that. The kids and I have been having a blast playing Four In A Line. You can play as a single player or two players.
As single player, you can select a difficulty level. I like watching my eldest progress with confidence into the more difficult levels. And with the undo button, if he challenges himself too much and gets token-dropped into a corner, he can go back and try again, which allows him to learn.
The younger two loving playing with each other. The only complaint I have is that there is no way to add names — just “player 1” and “player 2” — and the kids sometimes get confused as to which they are.
There are options to change the look of the tokens, board, and background, but other than that it’s a straightforward game that my five-year-old can start up and play by himself.
There is a pop-up ad just as you open the game, and an ad bar at the bottom, but no more pop-ups during game play. As long as I remind the kids to “x-out” that first ad, they haven’t had a problem with accidentally clicking on advertising.
