Dots: a game about connecting (free Android Apps for Kids)

Dots is a basic puzzle-strategy game with a bit of a twist. In it, players have 60 seconds to connect same-colored dots by swiping along a line. As one set of dots is connected, it disappears and other dots move down the screen. The "moves" mode allows players to try to collect as many points as possible in 30 moves. It's pretty straightforward and shouldn't be that exciting. But it is.

It's been touted as the Tetris of this generation. But what makes it worthy of such fame?

First of all, the controls are better than a lot of similar iOS apps I've tried. My fine-motor-skills-challenged five-year-old has no frustration with this game.

Second, it's zen-like. Yes, it's time limited, but there's something so peaceful about the layout and the colors that the insatiable, frustrating need to progress levels is replaced with sheer...enjoyment.

And finally, for kids who are learning about colors, patterns, and spatial reasoning it's great practice. Dots can only be connected via straight vertical or horizontal lines. By connecting some dots, they can move others down to make longer lines. A game is quick enough to prevent boredom and inspire continued practice but stress-free enough to not have them freaking out over not passing a level on the first try.

Collected dots can be used to purchase various power ups within the game, but these really aren't neccessary for game enjoyment and if you don't show your kids this feature they may not notice it at all. In-app purchasing is present so make sure you've got it disabled before handing off to the kids.
