It has been designed for toddlers beginning to grasp early numeracy skills and could be used with preschoolers or first graders who are working at a lower level than their peers as it provides extra practice and reinforcement. The handful of mini-games included in this app each focus on a slightly different skill, but all revolve around the numbers 1, 2 and 3. By the time your child has completed all the mini-games, he will probably have a good understanding of these beginning numbers and how they relate to real objects. Baby First Math: Math village has been developed as a systematic learning process moving from the concrete to the more abstract to help children make the connection between digits and objects.
The various learning activities require the player to match the number of animals to the corresponding number of animals/dots/digits displayed at the bottom. Every time, the animals come out in order, first one snake (or hedgehog or turtle), then two snakes, then three snakes. Beginning with matching animals to animals, then moving onto matching animals to dots, and finally matching animals to digits, this repetition reinforces the skill of the counting order of 1, 2, 3.
In between each learning activity is a filler game. There are three different types of these: memory match (again, matching animals to animals/dots/digits), a matching grid (matching the peripheral squares to the central square), and a block busting game to clear a path for an animal to travel across the screen (more like an arcade game than a learning game). Upon completion of each activity, whether learning or filler, a bird flies across the top of the screen and drops a key which is used to unlock the next level.Once all the mini-games are completed, and all levels unlocked, the whole app repeats from the beginning.
So, if you have a little one at home who wants to do math like her big brother or sister, this app is worth checking out. Or if you have a child with special needs who needs a lot of repetition to grasp the one-to-one correspondence of counting, then this app may be helpful to him/her.
